About the Winery

In 2006, Emma and Jeremy Borg decided to create a wine company with one aim – to raise money to build a more hopeful future for the remarkable and highly endangered painted wolf. There are fewer than 6,000 painted wolves, or African wild dogs, left in the world today. Painted Wolf Wines is dedicated to the production of authentic, distinct and delicious wines and to the conservation of African wild dogs and their natural habitat, working with a number of partners to channel up to 5% of turnover into conservation projects

Syrah 2017

About the wine

As the drought in the Cape began to really bite in 2017, we were forced to change our grape source and incorporate grapes from a second vineyard into our Swartland Syrah. The grapes came from two sites – Kasteelsig where the organic grapes are dry farmed and soil is primarily Glenrosa, a composite of decomposed shale with a little granite, and Leeuwenkuil, with similar soils and vines over 25 years old. Sustainable farming practices are used. This is a full-bodied, spicy Syrah with fresh red fruit and intriguing savoury notes. Well balanced acidity and tannins lend richness to the wine which has a lingering, complex finish.

Winemaking process

The grapes were handpicked and gently handled. We fermented the Syrah in small open bins with hand punch downs several times a day. The wine matured in French and Hungarian oak for a total of 14 months.

This wine will gain complexity over at least five years from vintage.
