About the Winery

In 2006, Emma and Jeremy Borg decided to create a wine company with one aim – to raise money to build a more hopeful future for the remarkable and highly endangered painted wolf. There are fewer than 6,000 painted wolves, or African wild dogs, left in the world today. Painted Wolf Wines is dedicated to the production of authentic, distinct and delicious wines and to the conservation of African wild dogs and their natural habitat, working with a number of partners to channel up to 5% of turnover into conservation projects

Painted Wolf Guillermo Pinotage 2018

About the wine

A bright, vibrant wine with spicy red berry fruit, evident ripe tannins and a lingering, flavour-packed finish.

Sourced from two sites in the Swartland: the organically-certified Kasteelsig vineyard which is owned by Painted Wolf pack member Billy (Guillermo) Hughes, and Werdie farm between Malmesbury and Darling. The sites are primarily red Glenrosa soil with some Oakleaf – both shale rich duplex soils and these vines are not irrigated. Yields are round 6.5 tons to the hectare.

Winemaking process

The grapes were hand-picked into small baskets and taken to the cellar. A portion was fermented in open bins and hand-punched four times a day. The rest was fermented in a rototank. No commercial yeast was used as these grapes ferment well with their own yeast. The wine matured in a mixture of French and American oak barrels for 14 months. Approximately 30% was new wood.

Cellaring

This wine drinks well in youth but will improve over time, gaining additional complexity for at least six to eight years from vintage.
